In integrated care settings, a behavioral health consultant, often shortened to BHC, is a clinician integrating mental health care into physical health settings: embedded in primary care, working directly alongside primary care physicians to manage chronic conditions, conducting assessments to understand mental health and behavioral concerns, and delivering brief interventions using techniques like motivational interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Clinical BHCs help patients manage conditions like anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders, along with insomnia, smoking cessation, and grief, and they train medical staff to recognize and address mental health needs.
